Background

The NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme is a 12 month programme that supports people with diagnosed Type 2 diabetes.

Participants receive support to lose weight by controlling their calorie intake and help with behaviour change techniques - with the aim of trying to put their diabetes into remission.

The Pilot

The NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme is a joint initiative between NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK.

It will build on the approaches of the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), and the Doctor Referral of Overweight People to Low Energy total diet replacement Treatment (DROPLET) trials which showed that it is possible for Type 2 diabetes to be put into in remission in participants recently diagnosed with the condition.

This is achieved by sustaining a low calorie diet liquid diet over three months before the reintroduction of food from month four onwards.

The programme will pilot at scale the approaches used in the trials with up to 5,000 eligible participants being offered total diet replacement products.

Reed Wellbeing is providing the pilot in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

Participant journey

The programme is available either over the phone, online or face-to-face in GP practices, where Covid-19 secure and appropriate. It is a one-to-one service, provided by a personal Reed Wellbeing Health Coach.

On referral participants complete an Individual Assessment over the phone with Reed Wellbeing’s Programme Support Team.

They then attend 20 sessions over a 12 month period with their Health Coach, broken into three phases.

Weight, Blood Glucose and Blood Pressure are monitored at each session. They receive extensive supporting resources, including handouts and trackers.

Food is provided by our partner ActiDiet with a range of flavours and products to support dietary needs. All food is delivered free of charge to participants.

Clinical oversight

Dr Colin Speers of Ferrybridge Medical Centre is the clinical lead for the programme in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. He will chair the quarterly Clinical Oversight Board and is the lead on all processes/protocols related to participant wellbeing.
